Ready for M.O.R.E.: A Young Gentleman’s Academic Success Toolkit
Your future is built one decision, one assignment and one opportunity at a time.
Academic success is about more than a report card. It includes organization, communication, curiosity, preparation and knowing when to ask for help. This practical toolkit helps POLISHED young gentlemen turn good intentions into steady habits.
Five habits that move you forward
1. PLAN TOMORROW TONIGHT. Check your school assignments, pack your materials and choose the most important task before going to bed.
2. READ SOMETHING EVERY DAY. Start with 15 focused minutes. Read a book, trustworthy article or short biography. Afterwards, explain the central idea in your own words.
3. WRITE BEFORE YOU SCROLL. Spend five minutes journaling: What did I learn today? What question do I still have? What will I do differently tomorrow?
4. SPEAK UP EARLY. Ask teachers about confusing instructions or missing work before small problems become large ones. Asking questions shows ownership.
5. LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITY. Ask a trusted adult to help you find school clubs, tutoring, academic competitions, service projects and scholarships suited to your grade.
Your weekly Gentleman’s Scorecard
Monday — Set one academic goal. Tuesday — Review a challenging subject. Wednesday — Ask one thoughtful question in class. Thursday — Revise one piece of writing. Friday — Tell a trusted adult what improved. Weekend — Read for enjoyment and prepare for Monday.
Scholarships are a habit of readiness
Scholarship preparation begins long before senior year: strong writing, a record of service, good relationships with teachers, and keeping track of achievements. For eligible Greater Lansing students, the Commission’s 2027 MLK contest offers a concrete chance to practice these skills. The essay contest serves grades 6–8 and 9–11; a separate legacy scholarship competition serves eligible graduating seniors.
The 2027 MLK contest deadline is December 4, 2026. Always confirm current requirements and forms on the organizer’s official page; IMOGUL is sharing this opportunity, not administering it.
The Gentleman’s Assignment
Create a one-page Opportunity Portfolio. Include your name, grade, three skills, two activities or service experiences, one academic goal, and one adult who can encourage you. Update it every month. Keep sensitive personal details private.
