The Gentleman’s Assignment: Find Your Voice in 20 Minutes

Oct 8
2 min read

A gentleman does not wait for someone else to speak for him.

Strong communication is developed through practice. Whether you are in fifth grade or preparing for high school, your thoughts matter. At POLISHED, we believe young gentlemen can learn to read with purpose, write with clarity and speak with respect.

The 20-minute challenge

Minute 0–3 — CHOOSE: Pick one question: What does respect look like when nobody is watching? When did you show ownership? What problem in your school would you help solve?

Minute 3–6 — PLAN: Write one sentence stating your opinion. List two real examples that support it. Think of an opening sentence that makes someone want to keep reading.

Minute 6–15 — WRITE: Write a paragraph or short essay using your own words. Begin with your idea, support it with examples and end with what you learned or what you will do next.

Minute 15–18 — READ: Read your writing aloud. Does each sentence make sense? Have you used complete sentences, clear punctuation and specific words?

Minute 18–20 — SHARE: Tell a parent, teacher or mentor one line you are proud of. Ask for one suggestion, then make a thoughtful improvement.

Try the M.O.R.E. writing prompts

MANNERS — Write about a moment when politeness made a difficult situation better.

OWNERSHIP — Describe a mistake you learned from and what you did differently.

RESPECT — Explain how you can disagree with someone while honoring their dignity.

EXCELLENCE — Share a goal you will work toward for 30 days. Include your first three steps.

For parents and mentors

Praise effort, honesty and growth instead of comparing students. Let the young person own the message. Encourage reading together, keep a notebook of ideas and celebrate completed drafts—not just awards.

The Gentleman’s Assignment: Choose one M.O.R.E. prompt today. Write for 20 minutes. Share one paragraph with someone you trust.
